          Introduction (Gufata irembo)<\/h3>\n

          This is first step of Rwandan wedding where groom\u2019s family take to bride\u2019s family traditional beer, made in bananas as an evidence for willing daughter to become son\u2019s wife.
          \nThat beer is shared among both families and neighbors within a small party<\/div><\/div>\n

          Nori<\/figcaption><\/figure>
          “Gufata irembo” means “gate” in English. As its name suggests, this is the very ceremony as an introduction of wedding.<\/div><\/div>\n

          Dowry ceremony and pay dowry (Gusaba no Gukwa)<\/h3>\n

          This is the step where groom\u2019s family go to the bridge\u2019s family in order to give dowry to the bridges family. Daughter\u2019s family owed cow, hoe, goats, and other traditional tools.<\/div><\/div>\n

          Cows are important property. My friend was proposed by a man who said “Please marry me, I give you 500 cows!”<\/div><\/div>\n

          During dowry ceremony, daughter\u2019s family brings many girls in front of groom and the groom make choice of his bride.<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n

          Exactly, I saw that scene “Who is a real bride?” like a quiz. If a groom mistake, it will be a disaster…<\/div><\/div>\n

          Civil marriage<\/strong> (Gutera igikumye)<\/h3>\n

          When I was a JICA volunteer, I was working in a sector office and I often saw this “Civil marriage.” Not only one couple, but many couples had a ceremony together.<\/div><\/div>\n

          The couple go to the church where a priest prays to them and receive an oath that they become one before God. Groom gives ring to bride and bride do the same.<\/div><\/div>\n

          wedding reception or party (kwakira abatumiwe)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          A couple have a wedding reception<\/a>\u00a0 which include a meal. Wedding cake is served as symbol of fertility and it expresses hope for a sweet life for the couple. People choose to have music and dancing, including the couple’s symbolic first dance<\/a> and family dances such as the father-daughter dance<\/a>.<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n\"\"\n

          Gutwikurura<\/h3>\n

          This is the last step of wedding where a bride is given right to do works.
          \nBefore she\u2019s given that right, no work she is enabled to do and she is not allowed to go on public, they hide her in room. She waits until family givers her right to do some works.<\/div><\/div>\n

          After (gutwikurura) a bride is allowed to go on public and enjoy with others and she starts doing some works such as \u201ccooking, sweeping, etc<\/div><\/div>\n

          I did not know about Gutwikurura and it is surprising. I thought Rwanda is enthusiastic to empower women, such as holding the most female in parliament in the world. However, was there thought that traditionally women should serve for men and her family and work inside the house?<\/div><\/div>\n

          Yes. Traditional women should serve for men. But right now it’s not here. We use gender balance<\/div><\/div>\n

          Thank you, I see. In Japan, we have also such a social change historically.<\/div><\/div>\n

          I was surprised at the custom of “Gutwikurura” that the bride can not work or go out to the public until she is given rights. But the fact that the values “women do housework” are changing and\u00a0 the religious wedding style wearing a wedding dress is also in common with Japan.
